The stock is fitted with the Model 1896 saddle ring/sling bar on the left side. It is fitted with an original carbine stock, single barrel band and short 1896 pattern no-hump handguard. The rear sight is graduated 2-6 (200-600 yards) on the side and 7-20 (700-2000 yards) on the face of the leaf with a "C" stamped at the top. It has the correct carbine length barrel, fitted with a fixed front sight and the Model 1896 rear sight. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 24978", indicating that it falls into the generally accepted, but slightly below the serial number range of the Teddy Roosevelt "Rough Riders" unit carbines. The left side of the receiver is marked with: "1895 U.S. Will ship to qualified parties for shipping/handling. The carbine is an early variation of the 1896 carbine of which only 1,378 were manufactured.
